How to Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking

Public speaking.

We have all had that moment where we were scared as hell to speak in front of an audience.

My first experience was when I was in junior high, I was meant to present a debate topic in front of the whole school, I was already prepared but was nervous as hell to the extent that I almost bailed. The fear of facing the audience was more than the fear of backing out last minute but then I decided my fear has had me enough and I was going to do this and do it right. It was my first time speaking publicly, Of course, I made a lot of mistakes that I am not in any way proud of but they were part of my learning.

In this article, I would discuss ways that helped me overcome this fear personally. You can also read about my other personal experiences by clicking here.

Reasons we shy from public speaking.

1. Nervousness

This is a major reason why people shy off from speaking publicly but it is absolutely fine to feel this way, even famous people who are very good at public speaking still get a little nervous before speaking. The only problem is when you allow this to stop you.

2. Fear of being judged

We often shy away from speaking in public because we are afraid people might not like what they hear and we would receive a lot of criticism. If you are afraid of being judged you would not get to try new things and learn from them so just do it because you would be judged anyways.

3. Fear of making mistakes

Making mistakes are fine, you do not need to beat yourself up over mistakes you have not made yet. Mistakes are normal and you would make a lot of them while speaking but most importantly you would learn from them so make as much as you can, it is a part of the process.

Ways to Overcome this Fear.

  1. Work on your breathing

The first thing you want to do before you address the public is to calm your nervousness and you can do this by working on your breathing technique. Take deep breaths before going on stage it helps in calming your nerves.

3. Practice!

There is no better way to crush any project than practising beforehand. practice your speech with a few of your friends or just practice using your mirror. This is a very good way to point out mistakes you need to work on. Practising is a very good way to boost your self-confidence.  Practice!Practice!Practice!

4. Make Connections with your Audience

when you are speaking publicly you want to make sure you have your audience attention. The best way to grab your audience attention is by connecting with them, most of the time I do this by picking a subject my audience can relate to.

Visualize success

Things often go the way we visualize them. if you visualize failure you are most likely to fail but if you visualize the success you are most likely to succeed. There are no limitations but the ones we set in our minds. see it then believe it!

Things you do not want to do before speaking publicly.

1. Taking too much caffeine

Most of us think that when we drink a lot of caffeine it helps us perform better, instead of taking too much caffeine just drink enough water and prepare for your speech. This is works better and has helped me a lot than caffeine which just gives me a headache

2. Not getting enough sleep

Most people overwork themself practising so hard that they do not get enough sleep. this can actually mess with your presentation. Get enough sleep so you can be well-rested before the day of your presentation.

The fear of public speaking is not something we can get over in just one article, it takes practice, commitment, determination to overcome this fear. I did overcome this fear and I am sure you can too! Good luck!
