Federal Government debunks the rumour saying all certificate issued by Ikoyi Registry are illegal

Whenever you thinking about getting married in Lagos the next thing that comes to mind is Ikoyi Registry, what would be the case for all union that was held there?

Nigeria Federal Government declared all Marriages Held at Ikoyi Registry Invalid and illegal

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos declared that it was unconstitutional for the Federal Government to conduct marriages.

The court presided over by Justice D.E Osiagor held that only the Local government marriage registries were empowered according to the 1999 Constitution (as amended). He also declared full closure of all Federal Government marriage registries including the Ikoyi Registry.

This has been a legal battle between the Federal Government and Local government Areas in Nigeria as to who has the power to issue a marriage certificate. This promoted the Eti Osa Local government Area to approach the court where they sought an order to take over the Ikoyi Marriage Registry operated by the Ministry of Interior on the grounds of the Federal Government as it has no business in marriage registry.

Nigeria FG debunked the rumour saying that marriages held at the Ikoyi Registry are invalid.

After the declaration that the Federal Government had no business in Marriage Registration, rumours have been circulating that all certificates issued at the Ikoyi Registry were illegal and invalid but according to the speech-giving earlier on Tuesday

Statement below_

The attention of the ministry of interior has been drawn to news making the rounds on social media claiming that the Federal High court sitting in Lagos has declared all marriages conducted by the Ikoyi Registry to be illegal and invalid.

We would like to state that this statement is false, misleading and a deliberate distortion of the decision of the Court in Suit No: FHC/L/CS/816/18 between Eti-Osa Local Government Council & 3 others where the Honourable Court held that only the Local Government council can conduct valid marriages in Nigeria.

He furthermore urged the general public to remain calm and keep going about their business with the registry.

Conclusion

In times like this, it is advised that people remain calm as there is really nothing solved from being restless
